Safety Measures to Take With Your Puppy When Camping

Is there anything better than sitting by the campfire with your furry friend and looking at the stars? We do not think so. Camping with your pet is a great way to have fun adventures together, but you need to keep your four-legged friend safe. Follow our team’s camping tips to make sure your pet is safe.

#1: Test out your tent before taking your pet camping.

If this is your first time camping with your pet, let them try out the tent in your backyard first. Set up your tent and let your furry friend sniff, lick, and walk around in it so they can get used to its smell, feel, and sounds. Do not force your pet to go into the tent. Instead, please give them a treat for being brave and going inside on their own.

#2: Ensure your pet is visible.

If you don’t have electricity, it will be hard to see at night, especially if your pet has dark fur. Use a reflective collar or harness, or buy an LED collar for your pet to wear at night to ensure they can be seen.

When hiking during the day, use neon colors to ensure your pet is easy to spot. A collar or vest in bright orange can help you find your pet if it gets lost.

#3: Learn more about pet first aid.

When you go camping, your four-legged friend could fall down a hill, run into a thorn, or find a nest of stinging insects. If you’re in the middle of nowhere, you need to know how to give first aid to pets so you can stabilize their condition and get them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.

#4: Schedule a trip to the vet.

Ensure your pet is ready for the outdoors before setting up your tent at your campsite. In addition to the core vaccines, your pet may need to be vaccinated against leptospirosis, a disease spread by wildlife urine, and Lyme disease, which is spread by ticks. Protecting against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes is also essential, so ensure you have enough before you go.

Whether your pet needs urgent care after getting tangled in a thorny brush or requires updated vaccinations and parasite prevention before your outdoor adventure, our team is here. Give us a call to schedule an appointment.
